At St. Olaf College, each January every student takes only one class for the whole month. This is called Interim, and many students take advantage of the short term by going overseas. It is especially useful, I think, for people like me who had never been anywhere outside the country before. A month is long enough, but not too long if you decide you really don't like it.

We spent about two weeks in Nuremberg, with other stops in Munich, Rothenburg, Auerbach, Leipzig, Dresden, and Berlin. Two other students and I also took a side-trip to Salzburg, Austria for one day.

Dachau

"Work will make you free."

For some reason, on this trip we thought it would be fun to do statue poses. Here is Judd with our first attempt.
statue

Jeff and Judd show how it is done.

This is supposed to be the trick shot that makes the house look tilted. It didn't really work.
tim

We all had German nicknames. Tim's was Fritz. His last name was Weiss. When we found this sign, it was a cosmic connection.
eating dinner

Eating dinner underground.
chess match

Playing chess at the youth hostel.
lenin

This is in the former East Germany, Leipzig I think.. It's Lenin and the workers.
train station

This is the train station in Leipzig. Train stations, the good ones at least, have a romantic feel to them. They make you think of adventure and new beginnings.
church in berlin

This is the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin. There was on old church on this site which was mostly destroyed during WWII. The new church, pictured here, was built after the war.

My favorite of the statue poses.

I believe this is a "self-portrait."
